◇Important Formulas & Concepts
Set Basics Set: An unordered collection of objects (elements or members). a∈A: a is an element of set A. a∈/A: a is not an element of set A.
Important Sets N: Natural numbers {0,1,2,3,…} (0 may or may not be included depending on convention). Z: Integers {…,−2,−1,0,1,2,…}. Z+: Positive integers {1,2,3,…}. Z−: Negative integers {…,−3,−2,−1}. Q: Rational numbers {p/q∣p∈Z∧q∈Z∧q=0}. C: Complex numbers.
Set Relationships Equal Sets (A=B): Have the exact same elements. ∀x(x∈A↔x∈B). Order and repetition do not matter. Empty Set / Null Set (∅ or {}): A set containing no elements. Note that ∅={∅}. Singleton Set: A set containing exactly one element. Cardinality (∣S∣): The number of distinct elements in a set S. Subset (A⊆B): Every element of A is in B. ∀x(x∈A→x∈B). Proper Subset (A⊂B): A⊆B but A=B. ∀x(x∈A→x∈B)∧∃x(x∈B∧x∈/A).
[!tip] Note on Empty Set
∅ is a subset of all sets, and a set is always a subset of itself (S⊆S).
Advanced Set Operations Power Set (P(S)): The set of all subsets of S.
Size of Power Set: ∣P(S)∣=2∣S∣ Cartesian Product (A×B): The set of all ordered pairs (a,b), such that a∈A∧b∈B.
∣A×B∣=∣A∣∣B∣.
A×B=B×A unless A=∅, B=∅, or A=B.
◇Worked Examples
Basic Set Operations
Let A and B be sets within a universe U. Union (A∪B): {x∣x∈A∨x∈B} Intersection (A∩B): {x∣x∈A∧x∈B} (If A∩B=∅, A and B are disjoint). Difference (A−B): {x∣x∈A∧x∈/B} Complement (Aˉ): {x∈U∣x∈/A}
Set Identities Identity Laws: A∩U=A, A∪∅=A Domination Laws: A∩∅=∅, A∪U=U Idempotent Laws: A∩A=A, A∪A=A Complement Laws: A∩Aˉ=∅, A∪Aˉ=U Complementation Law: Aˉˉ=A De Morgan's Laws: A∩B=Aˉ∪Bˉ, A∪B=Aˉ∩Bˉ Commutative Laws: A∩B=B∩A, A∪B=B∪A Associative Laws: A∩(B∩C)=(A∩B)∩C, A∪(B∪C)=(A∪B)∪C Distributive Laws:
A∩(B∪C)=(A∩B)∪(A∩C)
A∪(B∩C)=(A∪B)∩(A∪C) Absorption Laws: A∩(A∪C)=A, A∪(A∩C)=A
[!tip] Difference Law
Often useful in derivations: A−B=A∩Bˉ.
